Mazdaspeed2 is a possibility, restyled RX-8 coming to Tokyo

Mazda RX-8, Mazdaspeed2

The questionably named Brit-pub What Car? is reporting what’s already been suspected; that Mazda is seriously considering a MazdaSpeed version of the sub compact Mazda2. It’s been rumored that a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected motor may find its way underhood, pushing out 230 HP and 231 lb.-ft. of torque (!). But as we already know, the Mazda2 won’t be making its way Stateside anytime soon, which would truly be a shame if the MS2 was ever realized.

Additionally, the magazine is reporting that Mazda will be unveiling a revised version of the RX-8 at the Tokyo Motor Show next month. Although details about the reskin weren’t disclosed, there will be a gasoline/hydrogen electric hybrid concept on the stand.

Lexus Hybrid Sports

Lexus is the latest to join the “we’re looking at performance hybrids” chat room. Now that everyone’s talking about it, and rolling out concepts, we’re only waiting on someone to do something about it — as in, put one up for mass market sale.

Lexus US General Manager Jim Farley said the brand is looking gas-electric cars aimed at “enthusiast groups” outside of Lexus core buyers. Toyota already controls 78% of the hybrid market, and ironically, after Toyota recently blasted GM’s Volt, the article asserts that Lexus is waiting for the customer reception to that vehicle before deciding which way it will go. We suppose they will also want to see how their LS600h does, as well. Farley did say, though, that a “super-efficient” version of Toyota’s current hybrid system is more likely.

Three years ago Toyota showed off the concept pictured above, the Volta. It wouldn’t look bad branded as a Lexus, and we could only hope they’d create a hybrid system with the power and frugality to match its looks. Though a hybrid LF-A wouldn’t be so bad either.

We can’t imagine the thrill Mihai Panaitescu felt creep us his spine when he walked into the hall in Frankfurt and saw his design rendered in full form for the world to see. The winner of Peugeot’s 4th annual design competition not only had the opportunity to see his creation brought to life, but he’ll have the opportunity to drive the Flux in the virtual realm once it’s included into the fourth iteration of Project Gothem Racing.

You can read through Peugeot’s original press release on the Flux here, and check out our live gallery below to see Mr. Panaitescu’s pride and joy in real life.

Frankfurt 2007: Production perfection - Artega GT

Artega GT
 Artega GT.

We’re a pretty jaded bunch here at Autoblog HQ, so when it comes to a new automotive offering, the cynics among us have a tendency to dismiss some vehicles as unworthy of our attention, let alone affection. The Artega GT is the exception to the rule.

Designed by Henrik Fisker of Aston Martin fame, the Artega GT has proven that automotive perfection is still attainable in a world rife with mediocrity. The exterior styling speaks for itself, so we’ll let you peruse our gallery to draw your own conclusions. Its small footprint (74 inches wide and 157 inches long) combined with a midship drivetrain will surely prove worthy when the going gets twisty. And with a DSG-controlled, VW-sourced 3.6-liter V6 sitting behind the driver, it’s pure engineering perfection. Inside, the Paragon-styled interior gets a host of high-class touches, particularly the combination tach/speedo setup and minimalist switchgear.

If we had the talent, motivation and funding to design our own ideal ride, the Artega GT would be it. Thankfully, it’s been slated for production and beginning next spring drivers in Europe can pony up the €70,000 cost of entry for one of the most inspiring bespoke coupes to come to market in a decade.
